The Lord Of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
I think that I don't need to give a summary of these books as everybody has already heard about Tolkien and his mighty ring of power.
My boyfriend is a huge fan of Tolkien (it is basically the only thing he reads) and if I have seen the movies a million times (the extended versions of course), I had never managed to read the entire series. I tried to read it in French a few years ago, I really liked it but I did not finish it. So I decided that I had to read these masterpieces. So I asked my boyfriend if he could lend me his books and I made schedules in order to be sure to read them quickly. Tolkien has a really particular (really complex) way of writing. English not being my mother tongue, I often struggle with the writing and I could only read one chapter at a time (after that my brain hurts!).
I feel like I can't write a proper review for this series. Countless reviews, analyses, documentaries etc. have been made about this famous series. Still, I have some things to say about it. I liked the world he created, I don't understand how somebody can not see the amazing world it is. It is very complete and very unique. The magical system is really complex as well, but not that difficult to understand. What I really liked about this world is that even if it is completely unreal, it feels like it's ordinary and that it could happen. I don't know how to explain that, but it's a feeling I have.
The characters are also really great. They are not that complex, it's all about black and white. Still, they are well-developed and they always surprised you. I love the courage of the hobbit, the wisdom and the grace of the elves, the simplicity and the greed of the men, the cruelty and silliness of the orcs... they all have their own characteristics.
Of course, as a language-lover, I can't talk about Tolkien without naming his ingeniousness about languages. This man is absolutely crazy and so passionate. The languages he created have a system of their own, they act as real languages and it is amazing. He didn't just invent a few words or sentences like many others did, he created languages. And they feel real. I really admire that.
This series is full of joy, friendship, hope but also of fear, dark magic, power, sadness, treason... This is so very complete and I'm glad I finally read them. Tolkien is a genius and that's all I have to say!
